Ezra Taft Benson -

As a watchman on the tower, I feel to warn you that one of the chief means of misleading our youth and destroying the family unit is our educational institutions. President Joseph F. Smith referred to false educational ideas as one of the three threatening dangers among our Church members.

We're all politicians and Lawyers

There are so many political conversations going on. Most people say they don't like the politicians. Same thing with Lawyers. There are so many jokes about blood sucking lawyers out there. And we all smirk at them, or nod our heads in agreement.

However, in my human observation we all are politicians and lawyers in our own little communities. We all smile when appropriate, all the while complaining something needs to be done. Yet we do nothing about what is wrong. It would look bad to be the one to have a descending opinion. We all shake all the right hands, and stay clear of the things that might tarnish our image with those around us. Very few of us go outside our comfort zone and stand up for much. We don't want to shake up the status quo. We all feel our position is the only position and we must be right. We all feel an injustice has come to us and it was someone else's negligence, therefore they must be put on trial amongst their peers. And the position we take is usually the most popular or the one that gets us the most. No one really knows where we stand.

Yes, certain things have transpired in the past 3 years that give me this perspective. I hear many complaints about "the state of this country", or "the state of schools", or the "state of young people". What I don't see is anyone really changing anything. Are we voting for people with morals? Are we looking for other choices for schools, or letting the schools know what we want for our kids? Are we expecting our young people to act appropriately with character and morals themselves? Are there any consequences?

We all are politicians and lawyers. We aren't willing to say anything that might not be popular and keep us "in office" with our friends or those we associate with. We just want people to "vote" for us, or to keep us around as "friends". We don't want to rock the boat and upset the masses. We just want to represent the causes that bring us the most "money" or reward. The state of this country is in the hands of its people.

  1. very thought provoking. i have always said that i am not in to politics..i don't like to take a side on most things because i don't feel that i ever REALLY know the truth of what everyone is debating. things like health care and immigration laws...i just don't feel like i know all the information. i also feel like a lot of people have very strong opinions on issues they know little about. i have shied away from political discussions because i really do see merits to both sides of most arguments. but here it is...i do keep quiet on things...i don't know if i want some people to know my thoughts on certain matters....i keep quiet about my homebirth experiences...and homeschool for the most part. i don't complain about the state of the schools because i know that i can do what i want with my kids....except for high school...i hate the high school mentality and yet i am unwilling to take that into my own hands...i am scared of it. and i do complain. i need to think about this, because you are right. you are just right on the money with this post. keep writing...

  2. More than just government politics really. I'm really talking more about social politics. Neighborhoods, work places, church even have a certain political status that "must be maintained". How are we any better in our daily lives than the "Politicians or Lawyers" we condemn so much?

Thanks for your views on this post. I really like your insight.

  3. okay...i understand where your focus is now. it can be applied to just about anything..but yeah..i get it.

    social politicking. hmmmmm.....

still. it is the same for me in a way. we tend to 'take sides' and hang with those that agree with our side. most of the time we don't really understand all sides of the issue. for real.

i was visiting teaching a couple of months ago and the ladies were talking about how they couldn't believe that anyone would walk away from their house and leave it all junkie and filled with garbage and crap. i understood their point of view. however. i also understand how bad things can get when someone is depressed or sick. that person has lost their house. it doesn't matter the reason...the fact remains: they had to move out. i feel so bad for anyone in that situation. garbage piled everywhere and all. doesn't matter. i can understand it. i can understand homeschooling. i can understand NOT homeschooling. church is a hotbed of politics really. especially among women. women are funny creatures. we can be the best of everything and the worst. we can build each other and tear each other down in equal fashion...and be doing both at the same time with different people in different situations...without even knowing it most of the time. don't you think? really i just think we are all babies. just selfish immature kids all trying to belong and be loved...what ever it takes....sigh...i guess i am done rambling....

  4. Well said! Until we as individuals "grow up" or stop being politicians and lawyers, we shouldn't really expect more from our "leaders".
